Emotional Self-Reliance

How do you support yourself emotionally when you find yourself on your own –whether it be for a brief moment as you drive home from work, upset about something your boss said to you that day, or on a larger scale when a loved one dies and you permanently lose a significant source of emotional support?

Emotional Self-Reliance is the capacity to generate an internal source of emotional support. It is learning to love, validate, and support yourself in the ways you may desire from others.

Emotional Self-Reliance is having the tools to navigate challenging emotional states such as fear, anger, grief, loneliness, anxiety, or confusion.

Emotional Self-Reliance includes taking responsibility for your emotional reactions and then choosing actions that support feelings of well-being, safety, confidence, joy, energy, and love.

Emotional Self-Reliance allows you to be more emotionally independent and self-sustaining, giving you the resources to be discerning about relationships and to make choices that are truly healthy for you.

Emotional Self-Reliance is not a replacement for the support and care from your family and community. However, it is a reliable source of internal support you can count on when the external support you desire is not available.

By generating a reliable internal source of love, support, and guidance, you have a greater capacity to live from a heart-felt place, thereby enriching your own life as well as the lives of others.
